Raising awareness




Through the years we have learnt how important is to eat healthy food in order to have a better style of life. Sadly, even though we know these benefits and the risks of consuming fast food, people still cannot change their way of living and even worst; children seem not to understand the real benefits of consuming organic food and having a healthier living style. It is crucial for the society in general, start teaching to  children about the advantages of consuming organic food and show them how important is to change our eating habits for a better future. 

The first step to construct a different society is where children understand since an early age, how our eating lifestyle will change the way in which we live, also the way we will front the future. The kind of food that we eat define the way in which we‘ll front our life as old people. Many illnesses that people suffer nowadays are because of a bad style of living. 

Following that point, to start changing something, it is necessary to educate and teach children about choosing our food according to the necessities of the body , not just because something is cheap or fast. To make something of this possible, it is necessary to train teachers about the ways they can guide children in the process.It is true that it is a difficult task, because fast food is cheaper and it does not require much work, but if we think in the future and the benefits for us is wise to try.

Learning about Rastafari culture

                   Heeeelloooo everyone! There has been a while since we talked. Today we are going to learn something totally distinct to what we have seen so far. In this blog we are going to learn about the Rastafari culture. You may think about the relation with organic food, but you will see that there are many interesting things that probably you did not know about this fascinating culture. Lets see!

First The Rastafari have a particular diet called “Ital” a word that indicates vitality, or a vital way of life. This system of living has relation with organic food because they do not eat anything genetically modified. For them, our body is the temple, as a consequence we should respect and take care of it. Rastafarians that follow an Ital diet consisting of plants and whole grains, which are the basis of any healthy diet, will find it easier to maintain a healthy weight, and will live a healthier life due to their food choices. The Rastafari live in harmony with the creator and the environment, for the same reason food is produced on local family farms and cooks avoid packaged food from large supermarkets. The diet is primarily vegetarian, as Rastafarians eat no meat, chicken, pork, shellfish or fish without scales.


As you may notice there are many attractive facts about this culture that probably you did not know. Organic food is an essential part in their life and we probably could learn a bit about them. I really hope you enjoy the post, because personally, I learnt many fascinating things.

nom nom nom...delicious! :)




Helloooo there! :D This week I want to present something different to the previous weeks. Until now we have learnt why organic food is healthier, the benefits of it and even how to make our own greenhouse. Therefore, this week, I want you to enjoy the organic food by preparing this sauce to enjoy it with your favourite salad. I choose it because it s easy, fast and it is amazing!. Enjoy it! :)



                                                                                 
                                                                                    INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup raw whole almonds
2 tablespoons white  vinegar
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon mustard
1 cup of parsley
2 fennel bulbs, sliced extra thinly
2 sweet oranges, peeled and segmented
salt and pepper to taste





METHOD
To make dressing place vinegar, oil and mustard in a mixing jar and shake to combine.

Toss fennel, orange segments, parsley and almonds in a large mixing bowl.

Drizzle dressing over combined ingredients and add salt and pepper to taste.
Serve immediately.

Organic fertilizer! a different alternative.

            Hellooo. First it is important to recall that organic fertilizers are called like that because they are derived from plants or animals and even from mineral rocks. Here I will let you a list of the most common organic fertilizer!






Compost
The compost if one of the most popular organic fertilizers that one can make. We can made compost mixing decomposed plants such as vegetable peels, egg shells, coffee grounds and other organic scraps. The best thing about it is the fact that is free, easy to make and it will help you to have a better soil with all the nutrients that it needs.



Manure
Manure that is used as fertilizer usually comes from livestock animals such as cattle, chickens, horses and sheep. This is an excellent idea too and it helps to improve soil quality.

Marine by products.
This type of fertilizer is a great one because it provides soil with different healthy nutrients. There are different examples of this as fish emulsion that provides soil great levels of nitrogen. Also there is the fish scrap which contains both nitrogen and phosphorus. Finally there is the seaweed extracts that provide nitrogen and potassium and it have a less intense odor than the fish derivatives.



Minerals
Although rock minerals are not derived from a lived organism they are considered organic fertilizers because they are not processed and helps the soil that it needs. Examples of this are the rock phosphate, greensand and sulfate of potash magnesia.




Mulch

This is a very common an easy way to fertilize your plants. It is created from grass clippings, shredded leaves and old hay. It helps in a significant way the soil fertility and the soil's ability to absorb nitrogen and other nutrients.

The first step is motivation



Tips for preparing the soil in order to raise organic food…the first step is the motivation  

1. The first step to have a "healthy" soil. In order to do that, we have to know that we you should not apply to it any pesticides and also let it rest for a while before start planting.

2. You do not need a big space. You just need to find an appropriate place ideally it should has sun most of the months of the year. Remember avoiding to use places near to any possible contamination.

3. As I mentioned before, we should clean the area of land that we will use. If the plants cannot grow is because the soil was not prepare enough.

4. In order to have a healthy and fructiferous soil what we can do is to cover the area with organic material such as leaves, dried grass and other kind of organic plants. Also, we have to spread small kinds of organisms, little bugs, worms and other beneficial life forms that are going to do most of the work for us in improving the soil.

5. For the next time, keep the surface wet. It will accelerate the process for a rich soil.

6. Finally make your own compost with the different rest of organic plant and keeping it wet too.

Benefits of organic food! :)

          Even though we can have an idea about the benefits of eating organic food we don´t specifically know them. There are also myths about the real positive effects concerning this kind of food, but hopefully now I will clarify some of your doubts. I leave you a list of benefits for our physical health that are related with the organic food.

Organic food particularly contains more beneficial nutrients: It has been found that this type of food has more of antioxidants that prohibit the oxidation of other molecules in our body. Also it is also studied the possibilities of antioxidants preventing the risk of cancer and heart diseases.

People eating organic food have a better immune system due to the minerals as Zinc and Iron and also because it does not contain pesticides that damage our health.

When you consume this type of food, usually your sleeping habits change in a positive way adding the fact that is less probably that you would be overweight rather than eating conventional food.

We can enjoy much more our food because it taste better!. Usually we buy this food and eat it in a short period of time because it does not contain preservatives, for the same reason it is fresher and tastier. Also nowadays much food is manipulated to look bigger and look good but if you compare them with organic food you will notice the difference.

Other benefit that is not directly relate with us but with the environment is that organic food is usually friendlier with the place that we live. Why? Because conventional methods of raising food contaminate the soil and water with the pesticides they use. On the contrary organic food does not need those chemicals, the practices they use do not damage the animals or people who live near to them and it wastes less energy.

Finally organic food is friendly with animals too. The practices used to raise animals are much more respectful, because the animals are given more space to move around and access to the outdoors, both of which help to keep the animals healthy and also they do not use antibiotics or growth hormones.

Do we really know what organic food is?

Let me ask you something, do you know what organic food is?

First I have to tell you that a healthier life has a big  relation to the way we eat and what we eat. Organic food depends on the process in which agricultural products are grown and raised. Also there are some specific requests that products have to maintain in order to be called organic. Organic foods are produced by organic farming. This type of farming mostly tries to promote the ecological balance and conserve biodiversity. Organic crops must be grown in safe soil and have no modifications. Farmers are not allowed to use synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs) or petroleum based fertilizers. Also, there is organic meat too, it refers to livestock that must have access to the outdoors, this means that livestock must graze on pasture for at least four months a year, while chickens must have freedom of movement, fresh air, direct sunlight and access to the outside thus livestock must eat only organic food. They do not have to receive antibiotics, hormones or anything similar.
